Hatch mounted ladder - For passenger or driver side
- stock struts have 143lb extension force, you need at least 175lb to support ladder weight
- Ladder weighs 13.5 + 1 lb but you need that 30lb extra strength now
- you may need even higher rating when adding extra weight to the ladder
- like with other suspension, the struts may act 'too strong' for 1-2 weeks
- You can get Xterra rear hatch struts at McMaster Carr:
- phone: (562) 692-5911 (great to deal with)
- website: https://www.mcmaster.com (can get confusing without part numbers)
- 9416K147 - (2 needed) $23 each (price on 2021-11-19) 175lb Suspa gas springs
- 9416K76 - (4 needed) $2 each (price on 2021-11-19) M8 ball stud screw into the generic Suspa struts
- Phone is the fastest way to order from parts, to availalability to payment
- mechanics have a hatch support to keep hatch open during install
- Everyone else needs a tall friend because that is a heavy hatch
- If you're over 6 ft tall, you could 'use your head'
- 1.Place M8 tips on the new Suspa springs
- 2.Push on the hatch, then use a small flat screwdriver to pop off the metal retainer in each of the M8 tips of the stop struts
- 3.Remove the struts
- 4.Use the screwdriver to loosen the metal retainers on new M8 tips, just a little, don't let them pop off (photo below)
- 5.Place round ball tips of the struts into M8 tips
- 6.Make sure to keep the original alignment
- 7.Push on the metal retainer to snap into place
